SAMCAR “Cheers for Charity” Raises Over $5,100 for Housing Charities in San Mateo County

On Thursday, September 27, the San Mateo County Association of REALTORS® (SAMCAR) Foundation hosted its second annual wine tasting fundraiser, “Cheers for Charity,” filling Domenico Winery’s
cask room in San Carlos with over a hundred SAMCAR members, staff and friends, and raising over $5,100 for the SAMCAR Foundation, which benefits housing-related charities in San Mateo County.

The spacious cask room, lined floor to ceiling with wine barrels and lit with charming café lights strung across the ceiling, provided the perfect setting for guests to sample four of Domenico’s wine selections paired with gourmet appetizers, as well as a delectable artisanal cheese board and hosted bar. Moving between tasting tables, guests mingled in a sea of glowing wine glass lapel pins that were available for purchase to further support the SAMCAR Foundation and enter a special raffle for several prizes including a Domenico Winery Wine Club Membership, 2019 SAMCAR Dues, Bay Club Fitness Family Pass, and prize basket donated by SAMCAR’s 2006 Affiliates of the Year Maryann Bologna (San Francisco Examiner) and Anson Chan. In addition to enjoying food and wine, guests placed bids on unique sports and celebrity memorabilia in a silent auction provided by Jerry Walker of Signature FUN-Raising, and were able to capture fun moments from the event at a photo booth from WhimsicalBooth—props included!

Before the evening came to a close, SAMCAR Executive Officer Alane Gilbrech took a moment to thank guests for attending and introduced the SAMCAR Foundation Council including chair, Kirsten Hagen; vice chair, Christine Stahl; and Board Liaison (and past council chair) Suzan Getchell-Wallace. Each quarter, the Foundation Council reviews grant requests from local housing-related charities and proudly supports organizations including Samaritan House, HEART of San Mateo County, Caminar, CORA, StarVista and many others. Entertaining fundraising events like “Cheers for Charity” offer SAMCAR members a fun way to support the work that these charities do in our county while promoting the face-to-face relationships that are critical in the real estate industry. The funds raised at this event will add to donations made by SAMCAR members throughout the year to underwrite quarterly grants awarded by the SAMCAR Foundation. SAMCAR events are possible in large part thanks to generous contributions from annual sponsors— sponsors—organizations that make annual contributions to SAMCAR to fund association activities and charitable fundraising. Additionally, several companies sponsored wine and food pairing stations, including JCP LGS Hazard Disclosures, First American Home Warranty, Old Republic Home Protection / CRES Preferred Coverage, San Mateo Credit Union, and Supreme Lending San Mateo. Additional support came from event sponsors Suzan GetchellWallace, Fidelity National Home Warranty / Disclosure Source, SAMCAR, and photo booth sponsor Bobbi Decker. Planning and hosting these events is also only possible with the support of SAMCAR staff and the Special Events Committee, a group of SAMCAR members who volunteer their time to plan and staff events, co-chaired by Christina Galletti (Peninsula Regent) and Betcy Jacob (Coldwell Banker) in 2018.

In addition to committee leadership, special thanks are owed in particular to volunteers including Maryann Bologna, Toni Burrows, Laurianna Ceja Diaz, Kris Gonzales, Suzan Getchell-Wallace, Marlin Handley, Elmer Martinez, Ann Palermo, Celeste Love Pagan, MichelleVelez and Frank Vento for welcoming guests, setting up, and selling pins and  wine glass holders, which generated a significant portion of the funds raised at the event. The SAMCAR Special Events Committee is currently planning a holiday mixer at Pasta Moon in Half Moon Bay on December 6, and the 2019 SAMCAR Installation of Officers and Directors on Friday, January 11, 2019 at the Pullman hotel in Redwood City, as well as a reprisal of both the Bowl-o-Rama and Cheers for Charity fundraisers for the SAMCAR Foundation in 2019. The SAMCAR Foundation encourages housing-related nonprofitsoperating in San Mateo County to apply for grants from The next grant application deadline is November 15.
